For as long as I can remember, I have been inclined to bring beauty to things around me. Turning an ordinary space into interesting and beautiful has always brought me joy. My interest in interior design eventually led to exploring digital art and design. Over the past few years I have pursued learning the technical skills of creativity with passion and perserverence. When I’m not at my computer scheming up the next project I explore other creative outlets like candle making, furniture restoration, or hands-on craft projects. Makers gotta make!

Hey there!

I’m Helga Hildebrandt, the heart and soul of Hilside Design — a freelance graphic design studio based in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Graphic design and marketing have long been a favourite part of my work. As I was ending my 10 year career in non-profit office management, and having learned so much from past administrative positions in commercial banking, engineering and small businesses, I made the decision to carve out this new path into entrepreneurship. The question of If not now, then when? kept surfacing and ultimately became my call to action. Cultivating and defining my creative voice for my own business has proved both challenging and rewarding.

I’m wife to Harold, my bff and biggest cheerleader. He believes in me and I am grateful for his unwavering support. I’m mom to two grown kiddos, Mark and Michelle – they are my joy ♥. I aim to do them proud and to set an example to do what you love. My husband works on various infrastructure projects that often demand odd working hours – freelancing offers tons of flexibility for us to spend time together. Altogether, it’s a win!

I am committed to cultivating & sharing my unique gifts for creativity.

I feel abundant gratitude for the leadership and guidance of my teachers & influencers, past and present.

While working full-time I enrolled in a part-time (aka evenings & weekends) Graphic Design program to take the skills and techniques I was already using in the workplace to the next level. In 2017 I graduated with Distinction from BCIT’s Graphic Design program. Being a “mature” student with classmates who were my kids’ age was daunting at first but I had life and work experience which was (and still is) incredibly valuable to my learning.

I started Hilside Design in 2017 when friends and colleagues approached me to design a logo, brand or wedding invitations. In the spring of 2019, I made the leap from full-time employee to full-time freelancing and now work out of my lovely home studio. I draw inspiration from my surroundings and am compelled to create design that is beautiful and impactful. My growing curiosity and desire to learn and grow is the success of Hilside.

We’re in this together! Communication is the foundation of every great relationship. I value your input and encourage your feedback throughout our project. You’ll be a part of the process. Yeah, together we’ve got this.

I believe in doing my best on every project. Striving for excellence is the compass that guides me and sets the tone of my work. With this defined awareness, I’m free to lean in to thoughtful and intentional creativity

I am passionate about, and committed to, living and working with integrity. Being true to my values has intrinsic influence in the success of my work. I strive for honesty and transparency in how I work and live.

Always go a little further into the water than you feel you‘re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.
